Phase Portraits

Alright, so here's a visual aid regarding phase portraits. I included most cases. I omitted the case when one of the eigenvalues is zero. Hopefully your notes on that case are clear.

You can (and probably should) click on the scanned pages to make them bigger (there are two pages).

  1. Hi Timothy, I am doing research on Control System. I use a lot of linear algebra, along with phase portrait. I am just wondering if you could recommend a book as reference for this topics. Thanks.

    1. Hi, sorry for the late reply. Did you ever get the reference you were looking for? Were you looking for a reference for phase portraits or linear algebra? Also, what level of detail are you looking for? For phase portraits, I only know of the course book used for the course I TA'd: W. Boyce and R. DiPrima, Elementary Differential Equations. I recall that book also had a brief introduction to linear algebra. On the other hand, I think the undergraduate linear algebra course book used here at JHU (Linear Algebra with Applicationby Otto Bretscher) has a section on systems and phase portraits as well.
